STATE POLICE JAIL MEDFORD MAN FOR WEAPON/DUII CHARGES

Oregon State Police jailed a Medford man following an incident on Interstate 5 late Sunday afternoon.

An OSP report said at 5:15 p.m. the driver of a large SUV allegedly pointed a rifle at a passing semi-truck driver in the northbound lanes of the freeway approximately a mile south of the Canyon Creek exit. The suspect was located by deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and a traffic stop was performed, where the male was detained

On arrival, indicators of impairment were observed and the 42-year-old admitted to consuming alcohol prior to driving. The male maintained his innocence throughout the investigation, but evidence concluded he had pointed a firearm out his window wile driving. The man consented to standard field sobriety tests and reportedly showed additional indicators.

Prior to the suspect being taken to jail, the victim arrived on scene and identified the vehicle. The suspect, Johnathan Cunniff, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, driving under the influence of intoxicants, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and pointing a firearm at another. Cunniff was detained without bail.
