Staffing challenges at Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles are forcing the Canyonville office to reduce service from three days a week to one.
A DMV release said starting Tuesday, July 7th, the office at 241 Northeast Main Street will only be open on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a midday closure from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The Canyonville DMV will also no longer offer test drives during the reduced schedule. Class C drive tests are offered by appointment at the Roseburg DMV and by third-party testers.
The Canyonville office has two employees who both left to continue serving the public in other roles, including one at a different DMV office. Staff from offices in the central region will be shifted to cover one day a week, but not enough are available to cover all three days.
DMV Public Information Officer Chris Crabb said, “We can’t say how long the reduction of service days in Canyonville will last due to staffing and budget considerations”. Crabb said, “It takes months to a year to get a new hire trained and proficient, so residents should plan on a reduced schedule for the foreseeable future”.
The release said Oregon DMV is already severely understaffed as it has employed roughly the same number of people for the last 25 years, as determined by the legislature. In that same time, Oregon’s population has grown by over 800,000 people, or nearly 25 percent. Crabb said even if all positions were filled, there are not enough employees to cover what is needed at DMV offices.
