The driver was taken to the hospital after his vehicle landed upside down on Highway 42 one mile east of Tenmile on Thursday.
An Oregon State Police report said just before 12:00 p.m. a sedan was traveling westbound near milepost 65 when the vehicle left its lane. The vehicle traveled along the roadway and impacted a utility pole. The pole sheared and the vehicle flipped onto its top. The sedan came to rest off the westbound lane’s shoulder. The driver, an 81-year-old Roseburg man, was entrapped and needed to be extricated.
Tenmile Rural Fire District responded to the scene. Using hydraulic rescue tools, Tenmile firefighters freed the man. He was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center. The report said it was possible that the driver had fallen asleep.
Tenmile RFD was assisted by Central Douglas Fire & Rescue. The Oregon Department of Transportation closed both lanes of the highway for an extended period of time until the scene could be made safe. The sedan was towed from the scene.
