Crews from the Roseburg Fire Department, Douglas Forest Protective Association and Central Douglas Fire & Rescue responded to a natural cover fire in the 2400 block of Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard in Roseburg at approximately 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
Roseburg Fire Chief Tyler Christopherson said firefighters arrived on scene to find an approximately 4-acre, wind-driven, rapidly spreading dry vegetation fire on a vacant lot previously known as the old Champion Mill site.
Christopherson said fire rapidly grew to 27 acres in size before forward spread was stopped. As of late Tuesday afternoon, the fire was 100 lined, and 100 percent plumed, as mop up continued. The fire poses no threat to structures of homes. A dozer from DFPA and a dozer from Sierra Pacific Industries have created a fire line around the entire perimeter of the fire. Christopherson said firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to nearby residential and commercial structures.
Resources from RFD included eight firefighters, two chief officers, two Type 6 wildland fire engines, three Type 1 fire engineers, two fire investigators, and to incident command vehicles. In addition, CDF&R provided a chief officer, ten firefighters, four Type 6 wildland engines, and one water tender. Resources from DFPA included two Type 6 wildland engines, one Type 3 engine, one dozer, one Cessna airplane, multiple firefighters, and overhead command staff.
Christopherson said the fire was caused by a commercial mower conducting regular maintenance on the property. Roseburg Fire Department, Douglas Forest Protective Association and Central Douglas Fire & Rescue remind residents that there is moderate fire danger across Douglas County and all current fire restrictions need to be followed for the safety of everyone.
Other assisting agencies included the Roseburg Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Avista Utilities, Pacific Power, and landowner resources.
