Sutherlin Police jailed a man for an alleged stabbing and strangulation incident early Wednesday morning.

Police Chief Troy Mills said just after 2:00 a.m. officers responded to the 900 block of East Fourth Avenue for a reported disturbance involving a firearm.  Mills said while officers were enroute to the call, they stopped a vehicle that was leaving the area. The vehicle was driven by a 22-year-old woman and occupied by three additional individuals who were all determined to have been involved in the disturbance.

Officers learned the driver and her passengers were enroute to CHI Mercy Medical Center to seek treatment for two men who had sustained stab wounds during the altercation. Officers requested an ambulance which transported the victims to the hospital for their injuries.

Mills said a further investigation revealed that the group in the vehicle had been at the residence on East Fourth Avenue when the driver’s ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old Corleone Smith, arrived at the home and began knocking at the door. Two of the men answered the door and Smith was allegedly standing on the front porch, pointing a firearm at them.

The men attempted to disarm Smith, and a physical altercation ensued. During the struggle, the firearm was knocked from Smith’s hand as all three men fell approximately six feet from the front porch into the front yard.

Mills said the woman tried to intervene during the struggle and was allegedly grabbed around the neck by Smith with both hands, restricting her airway. At some point, Smith released his grasp of the woman, then reportedly produced a fixed blade knife. Smith then allegedly stabbed both men during the continuing struggle before fleeing from the scene in his vehicle.

Mills said shortly after 2:30 a.m. officers located Smith at his residence on Bambi Lane in Oakland. After a brief struggle, Smith was taken into custody, and a fixed blade knife was recovered. Smith was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, first-degree burglary, a felony count of strangulation, first-degree theft, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, six counts of menacing, second-degree disorderly conduct and for a warrant. Bail was initially set at $6,000.
