Monday is Memorial Day and that means there are a number of closures.

Federal, state, county and city offices are not open. Regular mail will not be delivered. School is not in session. Banks and credit unions are closed. Some retail outlets are not open, of may operate with reduced hours.

Memorial Day was officially established on May 6, 1868, and was originally called Decoration Day to honor fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. After World War I, the observance evolved from specially honoring Civil War dead to remembering all American military personnel who died in any war. In 1971, Congress officially declared Memorial Day as a federal holiday through the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, permanently shifting its observance to the last Monday in May.
