MERKLEY PART OF SENATOR’S GROUP JOINING WAR POWERS PUSH

This week, six additional U.S. Democratic Senators, including Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, will join other senators in filing War Powers Resolutions that can be used to force a vote to stop the war in Iran.

A release from Senator Merkley said War Powers resolutions are privileged, meaning they can be brought to the Senate floor for a vote by any senator ten calendar days after they are filed.

Over the past several weeks, the group has forced votes on War Powers resolutions brought by Senators Booker, Kain, and Murphy to stop what they believe is President Donald Trump’s illegal and disastrous war of choice with Iran and reassert the Senate’s constitutional role in matters of war and peace.

Senator Merkley said, “The Constitution is clear: President Trump does not have the authority to start a war. Trump’s disturbing threats of the past week clearly demonstrate why we cannot trust one person with that power”. Senator Merkley said, “The Senate must act now to reassert its authority and rein in this unconstitutional war with Iran – not rubber-stamp Trump’s reckless warmongering”.
