The Oregon Department of Transportation will close the Coos River Highway, Oregon 241, for two weekends in June, due to a painting and repair project.
An ODOT release said the 55-hour closure is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12th, and will continue until 1:00 a.m. on Monday, June 15th. The second closure will follow the same hours, Friday night to Monday morning, June 19th to the 22nd.
During the closures, travelers from the east end of Coos River Highway can detour along East Bay Road and U.S. 101 to reach Coos Bay and North Bend.
Dan Latham of ODOT said the highway closure will allow workers to paint sections of the bridge that are inaccessible when vehicles are moving along the travel lanes. Latham said traffic across the bridge is currently limited to a single lane, with a temporary signal providing traffic control. Most delays are around five minutes or less.
Minnesota-based Abhe & Svoboda, Inc. is the prime contractor on the $7.29 million project. All work is scheduled for completion in September.
Chandler Bridge opened in 1952 and is located about three miles east of downtown Coos Bay. The paint on the truss is peeling and much of the steel is covered in rust.
