A Scottsburg man escaped after a court appearance on Friday and was captured after a chase in the downtown Roseburg area.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said just after 9:30 a.m. 44-year-old Matthew Bigelow left the Circuit Court room in the courthouse on Southeast Douglas Avenue and had been remanded into custody. Court security was on their way to arrest him when he allegedly took off. Bigelow was on the third floor when a deputy saw him and told him to stop.
Bigelow continued running. A crew with the Roseburg Fire Department was in the area and attempted to detain him, but Bigelow pulled away. He was detained by several deputies in front of the Lotus Media building in the 300 block of Northeast Winchester Street. Patrol deputies arrived and helped transport the man to corrections.
Bigelow was lodged for third-degree escape and was remanded on the Circuit Court charges. Those include being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, menacing, first-degree violation of a court stalking order, attempting to commit a Class C felony, two counts of second-degree criminal trespass, and first-degree stalking, Bail is set at $32,500.
