A structure fire in the Green District on Monday has been determined to be accidental.
Central Douglas Fire & Rescue Fire Marshal Josh Waechter said shortly after 11:00 a.m. crews were dispatched to the fire on Apricot Lane in the Evergreen Village Mobile Home Park, just west of Interstate Five. Waechter said initial reports from neighbors indicated the flames were coming from the windows of a single-wide manufactured home. First-arriving units found heavy black smoke exiting at the rear of the structure, with flames out front. Within ten minutes of arriving on the scene, the fire was knocked down and extinguished.
CDF&R responded to the incident with three pieces of fire equipment and two command units, totaling ten paid and volunteer personnel. CDF&R was assisted by Umpqua Valley Ambulance and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Waechter said DCSO was involved due to concern of a possible criminal element to the fire. The occupant of the home had just been arrested in Roseburg, on a separate incident.
After a fire investigation performed by CDF&R personnel assisted by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office, the fire was determined to be most likely caused by the improper disposal of cigarettes.
Waechter said CDF&R would like to remind citizens to dispose of cigarettes in a proper receptacle filled with sand or water and keep them away from combustibles.
