Roseburg Police jailed a man for a reported assault in Stewart Park early Friday morning.

An RPD report said shortly after 5:30 a.m. officers contacted a victim who said he had been assaulted by an unknown man at the park, in the 1000 block of Northwest Stewart Parkway. The victim claimed that he was sleeping underneath the pavilion when the unknown subject, later identified as 47-year-old Daniel Calvert III, began to scream at him. The victim said he asked Calvert to stop screaming, which upset the suspect.

Calvert allegedly then struck the victim in the head with a large stick. The man sustained injuries to his head and was later transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center. Officers then drove to Stewart Park and located Calvert underneath the pavilion. Calvert reportedly refused to cooperate with officers and started to run. He ultimately grabbed a 3-foot stick and covered himself with a blanket to avoid the deployment of a taser. After a few minutes of talking with the suspect, he dropped the stick and allegedly started to run from the officers again. Calvert was subsequently tased and detained in handcuffs.

Calvert was charged with second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and second-degree disorderly conduct. He was detained without bail.
