The Cottage Grove Police Department has an active death investigation underway.

A CGPD release said on Wednesday at about 5:30 a.m. officers responded to a report of a male who was found on the ground, unconscious and bleeding, in the 15000 block of Highway 99. When officers arrived, they found an adult male with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers attempted CPR but the male was pronounced deceased at the scene after medics arrived.

Witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots and seeing an unknown person wearing dark clothing running from the area. No suspects have been identified or located. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

CGPD is being assisted by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and the Lane County District Attorney’s Office. Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to call the Cottage Grove Police Department at 541-942-9145.
