COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH CLOSES FREEWAY FOR HOURS

December 19, 2025 3:50 a.m.

A commercial motor vehicle crash closed Interstate 5 for hours from Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday morning.

An Oregon State Police report released Thursday afternoon said troopers responded to the southbound lanes of the freeway, near milepost 103 in the Riddle area at 4:15 p.m. The driver of the fuel tanker, a 64-year-old California man, lost control of his vehicle, causing it to overturn and completely block the southbound side of the freeway. The fully loaded trailer sprung a leak and was spilling gasoline onto the roadway.

Interstate 5 southbound was shut down at 4:20 p.m. and vehicles in the immediate vicinity were evacuated. Fire and Hazmat cleaned up the spill and cleared the scene. A towing company removed the CMV. Interstate 5 was re-opened just before 1:00 a.m. The Oregon Department of Transportation sent out a notification two hours later.

There were no injuries. The driver was cited for failing to drive within a lane.
