An Elkton man died in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 38 in the Scottsburg area late Tuesday afternoon.

An Oregon State Police report released on Thursday said at 5:20 p.m. troopers responded to the wreck near milepost 22.

The preliminary investigation indicated that an eastbound SUV, operated by 48-year-old David Michael Lawson, entered the westbound lane for unknown reasons and struck a westbound commercial motor vehicle and trailer, operated by a Washington State man. The collision caused the SUV to spin uncontrollably in the roadway, where it was struck by a westbound sedan, driven by an Elkton woman. The SUV rolled and came to rest on its side.

Lawson was declared deceased at the scene. The operator of the commercial motor vehicle suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the sedan was reportedly uninjured.

Highway 38 was impacted for approximately five hours during the on-scene investigation. OSP was assisted by Scottsburg Rural Fire District and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
