DEPUTIES JAIL MAN FOLLOWING LENGTHY ELUDE INCIDENT

Deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office jailed a man following a lengthy elude incident involving two other law enforcement agencies on Monday night.

A DCSO report said shortly after 10:30 p.m. 33-year-old Derrik Miller failed to yield to an Oregon State Police trooper. Miller was located by a deputy while he was allegedly driving recklessly near the intersection of Old Highway 99 South and Happy Valley Road near the Green District. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but Miller ultimately eluded and headed south on Interstate 5.

Myrtle Creek Police were able to successfully deploy spikes at milepost 110. However, Miller continued in his sedan and took the main Myrtle Creek exit 108. He then bailed from the vehicle and took off on foot, eventually jumping into the South Umpqua River. Miller swam across the river and then was taken into custody.

Miller was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center to be medically cleared, He was on probation and had a no contact stipulation with his female passenger. Miller’s parole officer authorized a detainer. Miller was charged with attempting to elude police in a vehicle, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, third-degree escape, obstructing governmental administration and for a parole violation.

Miller was detained without bail.
