SMART Reading is seeking community volunteers to help kids thrive through reading.

A release from the non-profit said local residents are needed to help support and empower young readers. As the organization kicks off its 34th year, it is looking for volunteers to read with students weekly during the current school year.

Since 1992, SMART Reading has helped more than 334,000 Oregon children build reading skills and a lifelong love of books. This year, SMART plans to serve over 1,300 students and give away more than 18,000 books in Douglas, Coos and Curry counties.

To sign up to help SMART Reading in the Umpqua Valley, call 672-6477, or stop by their office at 514 Southeast Jackson Street in downtown Roseburg.
