A Roseburg man was cited for using an axe to chop limbs off a tree on city property Thursday morning.

An RPD report said the 51-year-old man was using a small axe to hack branches off a redwood tree in Stewart Park near the Stewart Parkway bridge around 9:15 a.m. When approached by officers, the man was allegedly unable to come up with a valid reason why he was damaging the tree.

The man was cited for second degree criminal mischief and for having a prohibited weapon or tool on City real property. He was released on scene and officers confiscated the axe.
