The Douglas County Commissioners issued a proclamation in observance of National Service Dog Month at their weekly business meeting Wednesday.
The proclamation said, “National Service Dog Month is celebrated each September to recognize the vital role that Service Dogs play in supporting individuals with disabilities and veterans, as well as those experiencing loss, terminal disease, or recovering from disasters by assisting with daily tasks, providing a sense of security, alerting to medical emergencies, and offering emotional support.”
A release for the commissioners said Commissioner Chris Boice presented National Service Dog Month proclamation certificates to members of the local Lions Clubs, which have supported canine companions for more than 40 years through the “Lions Project for Canine Companions”
National Service Dog Month was first recognized in 2008, according to the commissioners.
