SUGAR LOAF FIRE HOLDING AT 53 ACRES

August 30, 2025 10:30 a.m.

The Sugar Loaf Fire in the Cottage Grove Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest is holding at 53 acres as of midday Saturday.

An update from Northwest Incident Management Team 13 said crews have completed 100 percent of hand and dozer line. Firefighters are now installing plumbing, which consists of a system of water tanks and hoses around the fire perimeter. This allows them to extinguish any lingering heat on the line. Aviation resources are assisting with strategic water drops to cool the fire’s edge.

On the western flank, a falling module is clearing snags, allowing crews to safely work closer to the fire’s edge. Three crews are starting from different points along the perimeter to build line more efficiently and effectively.

As a precautionary measure, firefighters are scouting locations for additional indirect containment lines farther west of the established lines.

160 personnel are assigned to the fire. The forest remains in High fire danger with Level 2 Public Use Restrictions in effect.
