Roseburg Police detained two family members following separate incidents on Friday and Saturday evenings.
An RPD report said at 7:30 p.m. officers responded to the 1400 block of Southeast Dillard Avenue after a caller said there was a disturbance. A 44-year-old man said that he had put a juvenile male in a chokehold to prevent him from pushing the juvenile’s mother. Officers reviewed a video of the incident and saw the man follow the juvenile out of the house after a fight, wrap his arm around the juvenile’s neck, and lift him off the ground for a few seconds. The man admitted he shouldn’t have choked the juvenile, but claimed he was trying to defend the teen’s mother.
The man was charged with a felony count of strangulation and was detained without bail. The juvenile was cited for harassment and was released on the scene.
Saturday night at 6:50 p.m. RPD responded to the same home for another disturbance. The juvenile had allegedly caused substantial damage to three of the victim’s vehicles before attempting to gain entrance to her home with a crowbar and knife, causing substantial damage to the door and door frame. The juvenile was holding a knife to his stomach when officers arrived and threatened to stab himself if officers did not leave.
Officers persuaded the teen to put the knife down momentarily and during that time a taser was deployed to stop the juvenile from attempting to pick up the knife again.
The teen was charged with three counts of first-degree criminal mischief and a count of criminal mischief in the second degree. He was placed in the custody of the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
