ROSEBURG POLICE JAIL MAN ON FIRST-DEGREE THEFT CHARGE

Roseburg Police jailed a man on the charge of first-degree theft on Monday.

An RPD report said on June 19th the 47-year-old allegedly turned in the victim’s phone to an ATM located at Walmart in the 2100 block of Northwest Stewart Parkway, shortly after the victim lost it at a nearby store. The victim was able to track her phone to the machine, and it was remotely unlocked so she could get her phone back.

It was later that the victim learned a 37-year-old had turned in the phone for $37 and claimed that he had owned it since August of 2020. Officers contacted the suspect Monday at 9:30 a.m. He admitted to turning in the phone and said he did so for a friend.

He was taken into custody and transported to corrections. The first-degree charge was because the value of the phone was over $1,000. The man was detained without bail.
