DFPA DEALS WITH REKINDLED BRUSH PILE IN OAKLAND

July 1, 2025 3;30 p.m.

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association dealt with a rekindled brush fire late Sunday night in the Oakland area.

DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said the fire was near Hogan Road. Pope said crews took immediate action, quickly extinguishing the burn pile. There was no spread to nearby fuels.

Pope said anyone who burned debris piles this past winter or spring is urged to check the piles for any remaining heat or smoke. Piles that are smoldering can reignite during warm, windy conditions and quickly spread to the surrounding fuels. Landowners may be liable for fire suppression costs and most likely, damage to neighboring properties. These costs can range from a few hundred dollars to potentially millions of dollars.

Pope said since the 2025 fire season began on June 6th, DFPA has responded to about 30 illegal burns. Illegal burning is a serious offense in Oregon, regulated by state law and local ordinances. Citations with varied presumptive fines per violation will be issued and have a 5-year limitation. Additionally, every occurrence of a violation will be tracked statewide.
