PICKUP DRIVER IN CRASH WITH UCC BUS CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER

The driver whose pickup crossed Highway 42, two miles east of Myrtle Point on Friday night and crashed into a bus containing the Umpqua Community College softball team, killing two people, has been arrested and charged with two counts of manslaughter in the first-degree, along with other charges.

An Oregon State Police report said Monday night at 6:00 p.m. 32-year-old Jonathan James Dowdy was released from Peace Health Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield, where he had been admitted and received care for injuries suffered during the wreck.

Dowdy has also been charged with:

*3 counts of assault in the second-degree

*5 counts of assault in the third-degree

*14 counts of reckless endangering of a person

*Aggravated driving while suspended or revoked

*Driving under the influence of intoxicants

*Reckless driving

*Driving while suspended-misdemeanor

*Criminal mischief in the second-degree

The crash claimed the life of UCC’s softball coach, 46-year-old Jami Strinz of Roseburg and student-athlete 19-year-old Kiley Jones of Nampa, Idaho. The other 8 occupants of the bus suffered moderate to serious injuries and were transported to various hospitals. Impaired driving is considered a primary cause of the wreck.

The release said OSP is actively investigating the fatal collision and does not have further information to release at this time.
