April 14, 2025 11:00 a.m.

Sutherlin Police jailed two people on ten counts of third-degree theft early Saturday.

An SPD report said 31-year-old Nicholas Stephens and 33-year-old Ashlee Williams were seen on camera ten times between March 31st and April 8th stealing truckloads of cans from a donation bin operated by the Oakland Booster Club that benefits children. The bin is in downtown Oakland.

Neither person lived in Oakland, and they only came into town for short periods of time during the alleged thefts. Sunday at 12:30 a.m. an officer spotted the pair driving northbound on State Street in Sutherlin heading to Oakland and initiated a traffic stop. Stephens and Williams were in the same vehicle that was reportedly used in all the thefts and were wearing some of the same clothing. They both ultimately admitted to the thefts and were taken into custody.

Each was detained on $12,500 bail. Stephens was released on Sunday, with Williams still in custody as of Monday morning.
