An injured hunter was rescued from a steep ravine near Elkton on Saturday night.
A report from Central Douglas Fire & Rescue said shortly after 10:00 p.m. emergency responders were dispatched for a report of an injured hunter off Tom Folley Road. Initial reports indicated a bear hunter had fallen into drainage and was unable to walk due to a possible broken leg. Initial responders located the subject at 11:35 p.m.
CDF&R was requested to respond with their High Angle Technical Rescue team for assistance. Contact was made with the injured subject just after 12:05 a.m., just 40 minutes after he was located. Access to the hunter was challenging and specialized equipment was needed to get the hunter out and to the waiting ambulance.
Battalion Chief Ryan Felker said, “Joint collaboration efforts from every agency involved were the authors of this success story”. Felker said, “It was dark, steep and technically challenging. Information gathering from 911 dispatch, recognition of needed resources from the on-scene commander to every responding agency involved, were all key elements for the outcome”. Felker said after review, crews brought the individual out of a ravine to the ambulance, which was a total distance of nearly 1,300 feet, gaining close to 800 feet of elevation. Felker said the injured subject was well equipped with emergency essentials in case of an emergency.
The name and age of the hunter was not released by CDF&R.
