A Sutherlin man was jailed after allegedly eluding a deputy and crashing his vehicle repeatedly on Friday night in Green.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said just after 10:15 p.m. a sedan passed a deputy at a high rate of speed in the area of Carnes Road and Southwest Rex Street. The vehicle then began to drive recklessly as the deputy caught up to it. When the deputy initiated a traffic stop, the sedan continued and eluded the deputy through the River Place Mobile Home Park in the 200 block of River Place Drive.
The vehicle eventually crashed into a fence and sideswiped the deputy’s patrol vehicle, causing damage. The sedan then turned onto Carnes Road, heading towards a dead- end. The vehicle crashed into the guard rails at the end of the road and caught fire, with a dog still inside it. The driver fled, and the deputy let the dog out of the sedan. Fire crews put the fire out. A K-9 track was attempted and two drones were deployed, but the driver, identified as 20-year-old Blake Wallace of Sutherlin, wasn’t located.
Wallace was found later at an apartment in Roseburg. Wallace said he panicked when he saw the patrol vehicle and believed his license was suspended. The man admitted to crashing into a fence, the guard rail, and the patrol vehicle. Wallace was charged with attempting to elude police in a vehicle and on foot, reckless driving, and three counts of failure to perform the duties of a driver with property damage. Wallace was detained without bail.
