Roseburg Police jailed a man Thursday following a prior alleged menacing incident.

An RPD report said an investigation began on Wednesday after a victim said she had been strangled by a 24-year-old man, at an apartment in the 2500 block of Northwest Edenbower Boulevard. During the incident, a verbal altercation escalated to the two people reportedly throwing drinks on each other.

The woman had the opportunity leave but instead followed the man and allegedly pepper sprayed him. The man blocked most of the spray and then took the victim to the ground where he reportedly proceeded to apply pressure to her throat which impeded her ability to breath.

Officers contacted the suspect at approximately 3:30 p.m. The man admitted to having the victim in a headlock around her neck while on the ground.

The suspect was charged with a felony count of strangulation and menacing. He was detained without bail. The woman was cited for unlawful use of mace.
