Sutherlin Police jailed a man after a resisting arrest incident on Wednesday night.
Police Chief Troy Mills said at approximately 6:10 p.m. two SPD officers responded after a caller said there was illegal camping in the area of Southside Road and Forest Heights Street. Mills said upon arrival, officers contacted 51-year-old Jason Ray Nightingale.
During the encounter, officers discovered that Nightengale had outstanding warrants for his arrest and attempted to take him into custody. Mills said Nightengale reportedly resisted, engaging in a physical struggle with officers, which led to all parties ending up on the ground. Mills said Nightengale attempted to take a taser from one of the officers.
During the altercation, the suspect’s dog reportedly began biting both officers. In response, one officer discharged his firearm twice at the dog, which then fled the scene uninjured.
Mills said officers were ultimately able to subdue Nightengale and he was taken into custody. He was charged with assaulting a public safety officer, unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree escape, harassment, and for outstanding warrants. Nightengale was detained without bail.
Mills said both SPD officers sustained minor injuries including dog bits and were treated at CHI Mercy Medical Center before being released. Attempts to locate the dog were unsuccessful.
