A Roseburg man was jailed for the alleged theft of a dog on Wednesday.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at 1:30 p.m. a victim got a call from a veterinarian’s office saying that the victim’s dog was there with an unnamed man who had asked if the dog was chipped. The man then left the veterinary office.

The victim checked his cameras and saw an SUV pull up to his driveway in the 3400 block of Briarwood Road in Umpqua about ninety minutes earlier with someone taking the dog. The victim contacted the veterinary office who advised that the man who had been there appeared to be in his 50s and said that he was a logger and had found the dog.

A deputy located the suspect’s vehicle at a motel in the 1100 block of Northeast Stephens Street and contacted the suspect. The man admitted to taking the animal. He was charged with first degree theft. The man was detained without bail. The dog was returned to its owner.
