A transient was jailed following a trailer fire in Winchester on Tuesday night.
Battalion Chief Mitch Doss of Central Douglas Fire & Rescue said at 6:20 p.m. his agency and Roseburg Fire Department were dispatched to the structure fire at 5000 Northeast Stephens Street. Doss said initial reports indicated that a shed was on fire in the back of the mobile home park. Soon after crews were dispatched, reports came in that it was a single-wide trailer with smoke coming from the edges of the front door. Upon arrival, crews found a trailer with heavy smoke and fire inside.
Doss said thanks to the efficient response of firefighters, the fire was stopped from spreading and was contained to the single structure. The single occupant of the trailer was not at home at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
CDF&R responded with three fire engines and two command units, totaling 8 personnel. RFD responded with two fire engines and one command unit, for a total of 7 personnel.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report on the incident said multiple people called about the structure fire and indicated that a suspicious man was walking around the outside of the home. Roseburg Police Department officers arrived and spoke with a 25-year-old man who was shirtless and holding a bong and a lighter. He appeared to be on methamphetamine. Numerous neighbors mentioned the suspect had been seen both inside and outside the trailer but did not live there. The man wanted to walk away from law enforcement but was detained while being passively resistive.
The resident arrived and said that he and the suspect, a family member, had not talked for multiple years and the man did not have permission to be inside the trailer. The suspect eventually stated that he kicked in the front door of the house and lit off fireworks that he found inside the home with a lighter. The resident said he did keep fireworks inside.
The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Adrian Stanton. He was charged with first-degree counts of arson and burglary. Stanton was detained without bail.
The Oregon State Fire Marshal is continuing the investigation.
