Roseburg Police jailed a man for a reported assault incident early Saturday morning.

An RPD report said just before 1:00 a.m. officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard after a caller said there was a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers found a victim at the scene with a bloodied face. The victim and several witnesses claimed that a 35-year-old man had attacked the victim unprovoked. Witnesses reported that the suspect punched the victim, knocked him to the ground, got on top of him and continued punching him in the face several times.

A family member of the victim tried to pull the suspect off the victim. During the scuffle, the suspect allegedly took that man’s cell phone from him, and then fled the scene.

The victim was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center via ambulance for his injuries. Oregon State Police troopers initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle that left the area of the disturbance at a high rate of speed, shortly after the disturbance was reported. RPD officers responded to the location of the traffic stop and contacted the suspect, who was a passenger in the vehicle. He matched the physical description given by witnesses, had blood on his clothing and bloodied knuckles. He was allegedly found to be in possession of the stolen cell phone.

The man was charged with fourth-degree assault and third-degree theft. He was detained without bail.
