October 30, 2024 4:00 a.m.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 2:00 p.m. Wednesday through 5:00 p.m. Friday for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said heavy snow is expected above 5,000 feet with 1 to 2 feet possible. Winds will gust as high as 50 miles per hour.

The Warning area applies to the Southern Oregon Cascades, including Crater Lake National Park, Diamond Lake and highways 230, 62 and 138 along with Highway 58 at Willamette Pass.

Forecasters said travel could be very difficult to impossible. Gusty winds and heavy snow could bring down tree branches.

The heaviest snow is expected during afternoon hours Wednesday and Thursday, when 1 inch per hour rates are likely.

Travel is strongly discouraged because of dangerous conditions. Motorists should not take detours during winter storms. Those who must travel should keep tire chains, a flashlight, blankets, food, water, medications and a fully charged phone with them.

A Winter Storm Warning means that severe winter weather is imminent and poses a threat to life and property.
