The Community Cancer Center has been presenting the Power of Pink awareness campaign during the month of October, including a new addition to their outreach approach.
The Power of Pink campaign is described as a community-wide effort to raise awareness around cancer risks and empower individuals to take control of their health.
Earlier this month the campaign introduced a special Student Essay Competition, in partnership with Roseburg Forest Products employees from the Riddle and Dillard plants.
The essay competition invited students from Douglas High School and Riddle High School to explore lifestyle changes that can help to reduce cancer risks and engage in the message of prevention and healthy living.
On Thursday, October 24th, Riddle High School held a special awards celebration to honor the winners of the 2024 Power of pink Essay Competition.
RHS students Aurora Hildebrand, Kyra Light, and Gabriella Bosse were recognized for their insightful essays on positive lifestyle changes that can reduce cancer risks, earning $750, $500, and $250 respectively for their work.
Angelia Freeman, the Community Cancer Center Program Manager, said “We added the essay competition component to our annual Power of Pink awareness campaign in 2024 with the intent to partner with Roseburg Forest products and do something that was community based and focusing on youth education in the area the plant workers live and work. We are pleased with the outcome.”
