ROSEBURG POLICE JAIL MAN FOR ALLEGED MENACING INCIDENT AT STORE

Roseburg Police jailed a man for an alleged menacing incident at a store on Sunday.

An RPD report said just after 2:00 p.m. 47-year-old Darren Smith was allegedly drawing with chalk on the side of Fred Meyer, in the 900 block of Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard. A loss prevention officer displayed a badge and told him to leave. Smith refused to leave, because he did not believe the loss prevention officer was an employee.

Smith then reportedly head-butted and shoved the loss prevention officer to the ground, pulled a small knife from his pocket and brandished it at the employee. Several employees and bystanders started gathering, so Smith walked to the grocery doors. He was taken into custody without incident and still had the knife in his pocket.

Smith was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, fourth-degree assault, second-degree counts of disorderly conduct and harassment and harassment. He was detained without bail.
