A local teacher received a big honor on Monday.
The Oregon Department of Education, in partnership with the Oregon Lottery, announced the Oregon Regional Teacher of the Year awards to honor exemplary educators in every region of the state.
A release from the Douglas Education Service District said candidates are exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled licensed public-school educators in PreK-12. 18 teachers were selected from around the state as 24-25 Regional Teachers of the Year.
There are 48 schools in Douglas ESD’s 13 component public school districts. Approximately 800 teachers provide instruction and support to students. Roseburg High School teacher Sheri Carson was named the Douglas Regional Teacher of the Year.
Monday Carson was presented with the award and a $1,000 cash prize at a celebratory school staff meeting.
Carson is a Career and Technical Education instructor for Culinary Arts, Hospitality and Tourism and Health Sciences. She is also the CTE Department division leader. The educator has worked at RHS for 26 years. The release said during that time she has helped advance CTE programs and industry-standard learning environments, providing students with valuable skills to thrive in their chosen profession and become productive members of society.
Carson said, “I believe all students deserve the opportunity to receive an education that will enhance and better their life”.
Carson said she is particularly proud of the student-run coffee shop, an endeavor designed to foster interactions between students from both the special education and general education programs, as well as engaging the public. This initiative requires all participating students to earn a food handlers card. Carson said students also gain valuable skills in customer service, money management and order processing.
Roseburg High School Principal David Vickery said, “Sheri Carson exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding educator”. Roseburg Public School Superintendent Jared Cordon said, “Sheri Carsons’ commitment to providing students with engaging, career-focused learning opportunities truly reflects the mission of Roseburg Public Schools”.
Sheri Carson will be on Inside Douglas County Friday at 12:30 p.m. on News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN.
