On Sunday at approximately 11:15 a.m. crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Lookingglass Rural Fire District and Douglas County Fire District No. 2 responded to an estimated 3-to-4-acre grass and brush fire in Umpqua.
DFPA Public Information Officer Rachael Pope said the fire was found to be located on a ridgetop, in steep terrain near Camp Creek Road. Pope said all responding crews actively engaged and had the forward spread knocked down quickly. The fire was trailed, plumbed and in mop-up status as of 4:40 p.m. DFPA crews will remain on the fire, performing mop-up: churning debris and eliminating hot spots for several days. Minimal smoke may be visible in the area as crews continue working. No structures or homes were threatened by this fire.
Pope said DFPA would like to remind everyone that the district is in fire season. Open campfires and debris burns are not allowed on all lands within the Douglas District. Sparse rain and lower temperatures on Sunday have not eliminated the threat of a fire occurring.
