TRAFFIC STOP ENDS IN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

An Oregon State Police traffic stop ended in an officer involved shooting Tuesday afternoon in Eugene.

An OSP release said a trooper conducted the stop at the intersection of River Avenue and Beltline Highway just before 4:30 p.m. During the encounter, the driver exited and allegedly attempted to obtain a firearm from the passenger side of the vehicle. A taser was deployed but was not successful.

The suspect reportedly did not comply with verbal commands and was able to obtain the firearm resulting in the trooper shooting the subject with his department-issued firearm. Emergency medical aid was immediately provided and medical personnel from Eugene-Springfield Fire Department responded.

The subject was declared deceased at the scene. The trooper was not injured during the incident and has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation by the Lane County Inter-Agency Deadly Force Investigation Team.

The identity of the person killed has not been released by OSP.
