A log truck and a tractor trailer collided in an early morning crash near downtown Roseburg Tuesday morning.
A Roseburg Police report said at 4:30 a.m. officers responded to the accident at the intersection of Northeast Stephens Street and Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard.
The log truck was westbound on Diamond Lake Boulevard going between 30 and 35 miles per hour and had a red light at Stephens. The 65-year-old driver said when he tried to stop for the lights, the brakes failed to work. The Sysco tractor trailer was headed southbound on Stephens, turning eastbound on Diamond Lake. The vehicle had almost made it through the intersection when the side of the log truck collided with the rear of the tractor trailer.
The report said the log truck’s front axle broke and the vehicle went through the intersection and over the sidewalk, coming to rest about eight feet from the railroad tracks. The log truck destroyed a power meter and caused a power outage. The truck also leaked approximately 40 gallons of diesel. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality was notified.
Roseburg Fire Department and Public Works responded to assist with cleaning up debris from the intersection.
