Voters in Douglas County have only hours left to cast their ballot in the May Presidential Primary Election.
The race for Douglas County Sheriff features incumbent John Hanlin facing DCSO Lieutenant Brad O’Dell and Greg Kennerly of the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribal Police. O’Dell says he supports Hanlin and expects him to be re-elected but does aspire to be sheriff in the future.
Voters in the Oakland School District are being asked to weigh in on a $4.5 million bond levy. Funds would be used to replace the partially condemned Washington School Gym. If approved, a matching state grant would add to the funds needed to make the plan a reality.
Only two local state legislative races are contested. First District State Senator David Brock Smith is facing three primary challengers: Ashley Hicks, Todd Vaughn, and Paul Romero Jr. In the second senate district, current Fourth District State Representative Christine Goodwin and Noah Robinson are seeking the Republican nomination. Robinson is the son of current Senator Art Robinson, who was barred from seeking another term due to a Republican walkout in a recent legislative session.
Statewide, there are contested races in both the Republican and Democratic primaries for the offices of Secretary of State, and Attorney General. Two Democrats are running for State Treasurer while the GOP primary has only one name on the ballot.
In Congressional races, one-term incumbent Val Hoyle is unopposed in seeking the Democratic nomination for the Fourth Congressional seat while two Republicans – Monique DeSpain and Amy Courser are the Republican candidates. In the Second District, Congressman Cliff Bentz is facing a primary challenge from Jason Beebe while two people are seeking the Democratic nomination.
All races for court seats, both locally and statewide, are unopposed.
Donald Trump is the only name on the Republican ballot for the office of President of the United States. President Joe Biden is being challenged by Marianne Williamson on the Democratic side.
