NATIONAL FOREST LIFTS WINTER CLOSURES

May 1, 2024 10:50 a.m.

The Umpqua National Forest has announced the expiration of three closures in the Diamond Lake Ranger District.

A UNF release said the two closure orders which prohibited the use of motorized vehicles within the Mt. Bailey Winter Closure Area and the National Forest Road to Hemlock Butte Cabin have both expired. Both helped facilitate winter recreational opportunities in the winter months and with the restrictions lifted that will allow increased spring access for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy.

The third order closed the road to Umpqua Hot Springs and was rescinded on April 23rd. This closure, which prevented winter travel on the road for safety, is no longer needed as the forest approaches the spring season. Additionally, a new closure which states the day-use area regulations for the Umpqua Hot Springs has been updated and will remain in effect through April 18, 2026.

Deputy District Ranger of the Cottage Grove, Diamond Lake and North Umpqua Ranger Districts Mark Sommer said, “These revisions mark the beginning of a new season of outdoor recreation on the Umpqua National Forest”. Sommer said, “As the weather warms, we are excited to see more visitors enjoying all the scenic views that the Umpqua National Forest has to offer”.

The release said the updated regulations for the Umpqua Hot Springs Day Use Area include measures to mitigate environmental impacts, ensure visitor safety, and enhance the overall experience for all recreators. Visitors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the regulations before planning their trip to the Umpqua Hot Springs.
