U.S. Bank has closed its branch in downtown Roseburg after 124 years effective Tuesday.

Regional Communications Manager for U.S. Bank Jake Holtrop told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the branch was licensed in 1900. Holtrop said information about how long the branch was located on Southeast Main Street is not on file. KQEN’s research seems to indicate that it was likely built in the early 1960s. That location had formerly housed the City of Roseburg fire station damaged in the infamous 1959 Roseburg Blast, the epicenter of which was just three blocks away.

Clients received notification in late January that the Roseburg branch would be closing. In February a company statement said client’s banking preferences and behaviors are changing, including a rapid migration toward digital and mobile banking platforms. That has caused the company to reevaluate its physical footprint, and in some instances, consolidate branch locations in select markets.

Holtrop declined to say how many of the downtown branch’s employees will move to other branches, citing respect for their privacy.  Holtrop said the ATM machine is being removed in conjunction with the branch closure. He said the building will be listed for sale in the coming weeks.

In past decades the downtown branch had dozens of employees. Ten teller stations were built into the infrastructure of the building. In recent years, a section of the building had largely been unused. Monday afternoon, one manager and three tellers were the only staff visible.

The U.S. Bank Garden Valley Branch in the Roseburg Marketplace on Northwest Stewart Parkway remains open. Its operating hours are weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. After several other closures in recent years, the downtown branch of Umpqua Bank is the only bank or credit union still open in downtown Roseburg.
