OSU EXTENSION OFFERS MANY FREE EVENTS FOR FOREST LANDOWNERS

April 3, 2024 3:20 a.m.

The public is invited to attend the many forestry and natural resources programs offered by Oregon State University Extension in Douglas County this spring.

An Extension release said the classes cover a variety of topics which are sure to be of interest to a wide range of landowners. Each of the classes is free to attend, but registration is requested.

For landowners who plan to thin or harvest trees in the future, consider attending the final three class offerings in the ‘What you need to know about the new Oregon Forest Practice rules” series. Each class covers a different aspect of the recently updated regulations. Classes in April and May are being held at the OSU Extension Auditorium on Southeast Douglas Avenue, just east of the courthouse. A June field tour is a full day tour that will be held at a small woodland property in Umpqua. These classes are taught by Oregon Department of Forestry foresters.

Landowners looking to learn more about local fire resources and prepare for the upcoming fire season can attend the 2024 Fire Season Preparedness Workshop, hosted by Extension and by the Douglas Small Woodlands Association. It will be offered on Thursday April 25th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Extension auditorium. The evening will kick off with a pizza social from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Suggested contribution is $5 per person, paid at the door. Staff from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, North Douglas County Fire and Douglas County Emergency Management will share information about what services they offer, what happens in the event of a fire, and what residents can do to prepare for a fire.

Female landowners interested in connecting with others in a fun and casual setting should consider attending the Wildflower Walk in the Woods and Potluck event on Tuesday May 7th from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at a small woodland property in Oakland. The event is hosted by Extension and the Women Owning Woodlands Network. This offers an opportunity for female landowners to gather, share, and learn about native wildflowers in the area.
