ROSEBURG PUBLIC LIBRARY TO HOST GEOLOGIST

March 8, 2024 10:40 a.m.

Roseburg Public Library will host geologist Larry Broeker on Thursday night March 21st at 6:30 p.m.

His program is titled, “Mt. Eddy: Inhospitable Rock, Harsh Climes, Tenacious Flora”.

Broeker is a retired geologist who worked at the Umpqua National Forest. He will discuss the geology and geobotany of north-central California’s Mt. Eddy which at an elevation of 9,025 feet, is the highest summit in the Klamath Mountains province.

Broeker said the recently ice-scoured, island in-the-sky massif is composed of rock that is impoverished in essential plant macronutrients and laden with elevated amounts of metals. A dazzling array of plant species has adapted to the hostile substrate and unforgiving physical environment atop Mt. Eddy through a variety of structural and genetic responses.

The program will be held at the library on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard. It is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the library staff at 492-7050 or: library@cityofroseburg.org.
