WINTER STORM WARNING/WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR REGION

February 28, 2024 4:00 a.m. 

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through 4:00 a.m. Friday above 2,500 feet in central Douglas County and its eastern foothills, and in Josephine County.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place from 4:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday above 1,500 feet.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said for the Warning area, heavy snow is expected above 2,500 feet with total accumulations of 6 to 9 inches, and over 1 foot in the Douglas County foothills and the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Winds will gust as high as 60 miles per hour. For the Advisory area, snow is expected above 1,500 feet with total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible, and 3 to 6 inches above 2,000 feet. Winds will gust as high as 30 miles per hour.  The Warning applies to portions of Highway 138 and the Tiller-Trail Highway. The Advisory applies to portions of Interstate 5 north of Grants Pass, and highways 42, 199, and 138. This includes Camas Mountain, Hayes Hill Summit, Sexton Summit as well as Smith and Canyon Creek passes and the communities of Steamboat, Toketee Falls, Glendale, Selma, Cave Junction and O’Brien.

Forecasters said travel could be very difficult to impossible. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

Those who must travel should keep tire chains, a flashlight, blankets, food, water, medications, and a fully charged phone with them.
