February 14, 2024 3:00 p.m.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through 4:00 a.m. Friday above 5,000 feet for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said heavy snow is expected. Additional snow accumulations of 15 to 20 inches with up to 35 inches over high remote terrain are forecast. Winds gusts as high as 40 miles per hour over exposed terrain.

The Warning area includes the south-central Oregon Cascades. It applies to highways 58 near Willamette Pass, 138 and 230 near Diamond Lake Junction and Highway 62 near Crater Lake and to Crater Lake National Park.

Forecasters said travel could be difficult in the high Cascades and may be impossible while attempting to get to Crater Lake.  Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Snow levels will vary throughout the event, from 4,000 feet Wednesday night up to 5,000 feet on Thursday afternoon. Snowfall rates could reach 1 inch per hour for long periods of time on Thursday.

Travel is strongly discouraged because of dangerous conditions. Motorists should not take detours during stormy conditions. Those who must travel should keep tire chains, a flashlight, blankets, food, water, medications and a fully charged phone with them.
