The 2023 Neewollah Parade is happening Tuesday night for Halloween.

A City of Roseburg release the popular costume parade was started on October 31st, 1933. According to local residents, historians and newspaper articles, it has been held every year except during World War II and in 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when “virtual” parades were held instead. Its returned last year as part of the Roseburg Sesquicentennial when the city celebrated its 150th birthday.

Trick or treaters should gather on Southeast Jackson Street, just north of Southeast Douglas Avenue at 5:00 p.m. Organizer Stacey Crowe said the parade will begin at approximately 5:15 p.m. Crowe said participants should parade south to Southeast Lane Avenue then turn around and head north while they trick-or-treat at area stores and offices on their way back to Douglas.

City staff will pass out candy across the street from City Hall. Umpqua Community College basketball players will be among those handing out treats as well. Other features include Captain Jack Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean” with a 20-foot wooden ship façade of the Black Pearl. The Roseburg Dancing Witches will perform a number of selections. The Roseburg Fright Club will have its haunted house inside the Roseburg Elks Lodge.
