Sutherlin Police jailed a man after he allegedly attempted to escape on a bicycle Friday night.

An SPD report said just after 8:00 p.m. an officer saw 52-year old Gary Barnes and knew the man had a warrant for his arrest. The officer attempted to contact him at a business in the 200 block of South Calapooia Street. Barnes took off on his bicycle after giving a false name. The officer following the suspect in his patrol car on Calapooia. The man reportedly attempted to ride into the fields behind a business in the 700 block of East Central Avenue, but didn’t see a ditch and crashed over the handlebars.

Barnes then ran on foot and would not stop despite being told to several times. A taser was ultimately deployed and he was taken into custody. Barnes was charged with third-degree escape, providing false information to a police officer and for a warrant. He was detained on $2,775.
