Umpqua Community College is still investigating a recent network incident.

On August 22nd, unusual activity was discovered on the school’s network. The college immediately began to follow its protocols in investigating the matter and engaged with a team of cybersecurity experts to assist with the process. The network systems were quickly restored. A UCC release said while there has been no evidence of misuse of personal data, the school is proactively stepping out ahead. For students who were potentially impacted, UCC is offering free credit monitoring. Those individuals have already been notified by the college.

The process of determining which, if any data kept on the UCC servers may have been accessed will take a number of weeks, and answering this question is a priority of the investigation, according to the release.

UCC President Dr. Rachel Pokrandt said, “At this time, we have no evidence that personal data was misused. However, because we put our students and employees first, we are investing in everyone’s peace of mind by offering those students and staff who were potentially impacted, the opportunity to sign up for 24/7 credit monitoring service paid for by the college”. Pokrandt said, “Everyone potentially affected has already been notified of their eligibility We want to do everything in our power to ensure each and every individual -students and staff – are able to concentrate on their studies and work as we open for a new academic year”.
