BEACH HAZARDS MONDAY

September 18, 2023 3:50 a.m.

A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect through Monday evening for beaches in Douglas, Coos and Curry counties.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said waves can run up significantly farther on a beach than normal, including over rocks and jetties. These sneaker waves can suddenly knock people off their feet and quickly pull them into the cold ocean waters, resulting in serious injury or death. Waves may also lift driftwood logs, trapping anyone caught underneath.

Forecasters said people should avoid climbing on rocks and jetties. Stay away from the ocean and remain out of the water to avoid hazardous conditions.
