An Excessive Heat Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through next Thursday afternoon for much of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said there is potential for high heat risk across the region. High temperatures reaching up to 107 degrees with overnight lows as warm as 72 degrees are possible. Multiple days of heat increases the heat risk.

The watch area includes central Douglas County, Josephine and Jackson counties, and eastern Curry County. The warmest temperatures will be in the valleys, specifically the Rogue and Illinois.

Forecasters said hazardous heat will increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those without air conditioning or participating in outdoor activities without adequate hydration.

Afternoon temperatures will challenge high temperature records.

Residents should be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
